Rising Street Dog Population Sparks Concern in Nizamabad

The growing number of street dogs in Nizamabad city has emerged as a major concern for residents, with increasing complaints about public safety, sanitation issues, and traffic disruptions across several areas.
Dogs spotted in busy zones
In recent months, packs of street dogs have been frequently sighted near high-footfall areas including the bus stand, SRSP market, schools, and residential colonies such as Auto Nagar, C.M Road, Malapally, Mujahid Nagar and surrounding localities.
Residents report problems ranging from early morning and late-night barking to dogs chasing two-wheelers and scattering garbage on roads.
A few cases of dog bites have also been reported from the city outskirts, triggering fear among parents and senior citizens.
“We are scared to send our children to tuition classes early in the morning. Some dogs chase bikes on the highway roads,” said a resident from Bodhan Road.
Volunteers bat for humane management
Animal welfare volunteers, however, point out that street dogs play an important role in controlling rodents and snakes. They stressed that a humane approach is needed rather than removal.
“The only long-term solution is sterilization and anti-rabies vaccination. We are already feeding them at fixed spots and trying to create awareness,” said a volunteer from an Nizamabad-based animal welfare group.
NMC plans ABC drive
Officials from Nizamabad Municipal Corporation said they are planning to launch an _Animal Birth Control (ABC) and Anti-Rabies Vaccination drive_ in coordination with the veterinary department.
The corporation has also urged citizens to avoid dumping food waste in open areas and to report any aggressive or injured dog to the municipal helpline for immediate action.
Officials added that public cooperation and responsible waste disposal will be key to managing the street dog population effectively in the city.
