Telangana Sets All-Time Record in Power Demand

Telangana Sets All-Time Record in Power Demand: 20,003 MW

By G Shairaz/Nizamabad : Telangana recorded an unprecedented surge in electricity demand, setting historical records across the state on October 15.

Power demand reached an all-time high of 20,003 MW at 10:29 AM, eclipsing the previous peak of 18,548 MW by 1,455 MW. Statewide daily energy consumption also climbed to 334.54 million units on the same day.

What Drove The Surge?

Heavy reliance on agricultural borewells and irrigation pump sets, compounded by declining groundwater tables, drove rural consumption higher. At the same time, persistent heat and humidity elevated domestic air-conditioning and commercial cooling loads across urban areas.

Field Response - 'Polam Bata'

To handle the pressure, TGSPDCL launched morning field inspections under the *"Polam Bata"* initiative, sending engineers into rural agricultural belts to inspect transformers, repair low-voltage lines, and prevent crop-irrigation disruptions.

Fuel & Generation Pressure

Thermal stations across the state have operated under tight fuel reserves, prompting state and central authorities to arrange extra coal linkages from Coal India to stabilize baseline generation.

Officials say the demand is expected to remain high in the coming days, and the department is monitoring the grid closely to avoid interruptions.
